Decided not to fish a match day as I need to get my kit sorted out for my annual trip to Holland.
Decided to have a few hours on the canal so that if it was no good I could come home early and make a start packing.
However, a few people I know were having a knock up on the canal and so I decided to join them.
Only baits I took were pellets and groundbait and because it was cold and blustery I thought that maggots or bread would be the baits to do well.
I fed three lines with a couple of balls of groundbait and a handful of "B" soaked micros and started at 5m.
Never had a bite for 30 minutes but then had a couple of 12oz skimmers and one just over 2lbs.
I was having to wait a long time for bites and so moved on to the 10m line.
This was also slow and again I had to wait a long time for bites. Had a few fish before having a look at 11.5m.
Only had two small fish in 30 mins and so went back on to the 5 and 10m lines. Never had a bite at 5m and only a couple of small skimmers at 10m.
Normally the 11.5m line can be most productive and so I decided to sit it out at that length.
It was quiet for a bit and then I had really good spell where I had a lot of 6oz fish plus a few bonuses.
With about an hour to go I had a proper bream of about 2.5lbs.
I missed a bite next put in (only one I missed) but then never had another touch.
I thought I had between 15 and 20lbs and given the conditions wasn't too disappointed to record 18lbs 1oz.
9lb was next best caught on maggots and bread. He did lose a carp but not sure if that would have been enough to beat me.
Unusually, I lost a few fish today. One was a proper bream, one was a big skimmer and the other was a small skimmer.
It was noticeable that nearly all the fish I landed were very lightly hooked and so I guess this is why they came off.
Off to Holland next weekend for some serious bagging (weather permitting). Just hope my mate gets back in time from Turkey. ;D
