What can I say about fishing at the moment. This has not only been one of the worst winters for years weather-wise but the fishing has been terrible as well.
Most of my winter fishing is on the Kennet and Avon canal or some local lakes where I fish a series of 6 matches.
I have given up on the canal until the weather warms up and I can get on the pellets again.
At the moment bread seems to have lost its effectiveness and the roach don’t seem to be responding to bloodworm and joker in numbers.
I had one reasonable match where I did well section wise on a day when the canal was frozen solid. I never had a bite on bread or on bloodworm on any of my close in lines.
I did start catching a few fish on bloodworm on the limit that I had broken the ice to. That was after I put my hookers in to a B solution.
Although I got good section points I think I would have got more if a few boats hadn’t gone through the canal and pushed the ice back in front of me which meant that I could hardly get a line in the water for the last hour or so.
As for the series on the lakes, that is barely worth talking about.
I framed in a low weight practice match when most of the venue was frozen but the actual series has been a disaster.
First match I drew a good summer peg but not so good in winter, especially as it is next to an aerator. I had a few crucians and lots of small roach but only good enough for midway in the section.
Next match I was one of a line of 4 blanks and had to sit and watch guys catch on the other side of an island in front me, with the lake winner sat behind me. Very frustrating
Third match I drew well but when I got to the peg, which is in a bay, I found it covered in dead reed stalks. Although I was able to clear a channel, the rubbish kept drifting in and out of my fishing lines. I lost loads of small fish which just got knocked off by rubbish as I was shipping back. Again midway in section.
Last match in the series, I drew the wrong end of the section which normally produces either the lake or match winner. I had 3 carp for 11lb but the guy two pegs to my left had 50lbs plus and the guy two from him had 67lbs for the lake and overall win. The guy behind him had 30lbs plus for third overall. Points wise I was off the pace but I think I may have got the section money by quadruple default. I wnt before the results but I'm hoping for a pleasant surprise next match, which is this Sunday coming.
Last Sunday, a club that I belong to had a match on another of the lakes at the complex. This lake is stuffed with small carp, FI’s and gold fish. I was really looking forward to it.
Unfortunately we had a sharp frost on Saturday night and the fishing was awful. Best laid plans and all that.
Only 4 people caught carp and the majority blanked or like me caught a few stickle backs. At least I had a few bites I suppose but I still reckon I would have done better with a tiddler net and a jam jar!!!.
There are two matches in the series left but I am out of the running to do anything overall and so I will be fishing this Sunday but my match team has a match on the canal on the date of the second one and that is where I’ll be heading.
“B”- wise I haven’t really done much. Normally by now, pellets and corn should be dominating on the lakes I fish but the only baits catching fish so far this year are maggots/pinkies and you have to be careful what you feed, if you feed at all. Groundbait is definitely a non starter.
I reckon that in April the canal skimmers/bream will start taking pellets again and I’ll be off to Holland in May. Hopefully the weather will be OK by then and that the Bream will have spawned or at least be moving in tor the canals.
