Just got back from a week in Holland with some encouraging results.
I mainly fished the Voorne Canal which at this time of year is packed with Bream which enter the canal to spawn.
Although the fishing was not as good as previous years, largely due to wind being in East, I still managed to average over 100lbs a day on Voorne. Top weight was 183lbs - all Bream, although I did lose a baby Zander at the net that I hooked on a soft pellet.
Caught 95% of my fish on soft pellet and the other 5% on corn. Never used or fed a maggot or caster.
Fished at 10 or 11.5 m, depending on depth of peg. Balled in 14 big balls of groundbait at start laced with corn and pellets and cupped in 2 big pots of a mix micro and 4mm pellets. Feed Pellets were soaked in "B" and expanders pumped in it.
At start of each day I balled in about 14 balls of groundbait laced with corn and pellets. I also cupped in two or three large pots of pellets.
First couple of days I topped up at regular intervals with groundbait and pellets. Fish would back off for a bit but soon came back. Only problem was that fish seemed to come off bottom. I put this down to the groundbait being wafted off the bottom by feeding fish.
To avoid bringing the fish up in the water and foul hooking them, which was a problem, I drastically reduced the amount of groundbait I put in as a top up and regularly dumped a couple of big pot fulls of pellet in one big hit. Most days I fed a minimum of 6-8 pints of pellets.
During the course of day I changed ratio of pellets I was feeding. At start it was 60% Micros to 40% 4 mm's. By end it was probably some thing like 70% 4 mm's to 30% micros.
It was noticeable that peg got stronger as more pellets went in and that fished backed off for longer if I fed groundbait with the top ups. In the end I was just feeding the "B" soaked pellets.
To put things in perspective, I was in a party of 9 but we only fished together twice. On both days I had top weight in our group, 149 lbs one day and 183 lbs the next. The first day I had 40lbs more than next guy and the second day I had 70lbs more.
On both days others started catching before me but pegs their pegs died for long periods. I was starting slowly but once I started catching I was putting fish in the net for longer.
