So that is the winter almost out of the way.
Normally I fish the canal a lot in winter but due to the bad weather before Xmas and the fact that it looked like it may have been difficult to easily source bloodworm and joker due to the weather I decided on a change of course.
As a result I decided to concentrate on a commercial fishery for the winter/spring.
My venue of choice has two match lakes, one an 18 pegger and the other a 40 pegger. Both are canal style. Most matches are on the bigger of two lakes but a few matches have been on the small one.
Although there is a reasonable head of silvers it is carp that predominate.
I have tried to keep things as simple as possible. On the bigger lake I have just fished one line at bottom of far shelf in about 5’ of water and one at top of far shelf.
I have similar approach on the small lake which is only about 3’ deep. However, I also fish have a line in nearside margin.
Rig wise I have been fishing 0.12 mainline with 0.10 hook lengths.
Floats vary between 0.4g - 0.6g down track on big lake with 4x10 or 4x12 up shelf depending on depth.
On small lake I fish 4x12 in open water and 4x10 on shelf.
At start I feed a few “b” soaked micros on each line together with few pinkies and then drip feed a few pinkies and a few micros depending on bites.
On the hook, maggot has been best bait but if it is has fished hard I have used fluoro pinkie on the hook.
On Sunday I won on the small lake by catching on corn and in the next week or so pellet and paste will also start to catch.
Since Jan 2 I have fished 13 matches (12 Sundays and one mid-weeker) and framed 8 times. That is 4 wins, 3 seconds and one fourth.
In addition I have fished two matches on another venue where I have been second and third.
I'm the first to admit that I drawn reasonably well but 10 pick ups from a possible 15 is still pretty good
At the start of May I plan to get back on the canal as much as possible to make the most of the skimmer/bream fishing and we are off to Holland at end of May.
