Back to Acorn today.
This time on the old match lake. The lake is a canal with a bowl at either end,
Disappointed to arrive at venue to find some lakes clear of ice but the lake we were on was frozen except for the bowl at one end. I was annoyed because I had left my ice breaker at home.
Luckily for me I drew Peg 4 which is in the bowl and was almost free of ice.
The lake is shallow - mostly about 3' feet and I planned to keep it simple and just set up 3 rigs,
First one was a 4x10 float to fish two lines at 5m. A 4x12 rig to fish at 11.5m and a 4X10 rig to fish the margin but because the way the wind was blowing I couldn't really see me using this rig much.
At 5m I had 3’ and by plumbing around at 11.5m I found a hole which was 4’ deep and about 6” deeper than the surrounding areas.
I fed one of the 5m lines with a small ball of groundbait and a mixture of micro pellet, casters and pinkies. The other 5m line and the 11.5m line I fed the same except without groundbait.
I started over the GB but the wind was awkward and the presentation wasn’t right. It was better over the other 5m line but I couldn’t get a bite.
I tried the 11.5m line but again nothing.
The guy on peg 3 had a couple of early fish and no one else had a thing.
After 2 hours of rotating swims I went back over one of the 5m lines with pinkie on the hook and after a couple of minutes had a carp of about 2lbs.
No more indications on this line and so it was back out to 11.5m. I had been fishing with Tubertini 808 size 22 on this rig. These are biggish hooks for their size and so I changed to a Middy 6313 size 22 which looks like a proper 22.
First put in with fluoro big maggot I had a quick bite which I think was a liner. I laid the rig in again and had a proper bite which saw another carp in the net.
For the next hour I had the odd fish and with an hour to go I had 6 carp but the guy on Peg 3 was also catching. He had more than me but I thought my fish were bigger.
For the last hour I never had a bite but nor did the guy on peg 3.
At the end Peg 3 had 9 fish for 12lbs 9ozs and my 6 fish went 18lbs 15ozs.
Only one other carp had been caught and one angler had 4 small roach. Everyone else blanked.
